Government has committed almost $250,000 this year to Sport PEI and Recreation PEI to help increase the physical activity level of Islanders, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.
“Sport and recreation programming are at the heart of strong and healthy Island communities,” said Minister Bertram. “This $250,000 investment will assist in providing many programs and services to help keep Islanders moving and increase health promotion.”
Health and Wellness is providing $40,000 to Recreation PEI to continue its many programs, including: High Five leader training, playground inspecting, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) grants and facility operator training (arena, pool, fields), Tobacco Free Sport and Recreation, Sogo Active Grants for teen physical activity challenges, and the Canadian Tire Jumpstart financial assistance program.
“Providing quality, safe leadership, as well as access to programs, is paramount for community recreation and activity organizers and administrators,” said Recreation PEI President Barb Mullaly.
Earlier this year, Health and Wellness also announced its continued financial support for the go!PEI initiative, a free grass roots program designed to assist Islanders in taking control of their healthy eating habits and physical fitness. Recreation PEI provides the administration of go!PEI.
Sport PEI will receive $209,900 from Health and Wellness this year to enhance amateur sport in Prince Edward Island.
“We are dedicated to the development and promotion of the amateur sport community in Prince Edward Island by providing leadership, direction and support to our member sport organizations in their delivery of sport opportunities to all Islanders,” said Sport PEI President Ron Waite.
