Federal and Provincial Governments support A.A. MacDonald Memorial Gardens upgrade

* Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal [to May 2015]
The storm water management system at the A.A. MacDonald Memorial Gardens has been upgraded thanks to support provided by the federal and provincial governments.

“Our Government is pleased to support community infrastructure that keeps our communities vibrant and strong,” said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. “These upgrades will ensure that a valuable local community facility and tourism attraction continues to serve the families of this community for years to come.”

The Government of Canada, the Province of PEI, and the Town of Georgetown have shared the cost of this project totalling $43,200. Through this investment, the A.A. MacDonald Memorial Gardens has received upgrades to the storm water management system by improving the ditching and replacing three catch basins. Water will be redirected into the existing storm water system on Grafton Street in Georgetown, which will reduce the flooding that has been occurring in the centre of the town.

“The A.A. MacDonald Memorial Gardens act as a beautiful centrepiece to the landscape in Georgetown,” said Stratford-Kinlock MLA Cynthia Dunsford on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley. “The improvements we’ve made here will help protect these gardens from flooding and will help preserve them for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.”

Georgetown is among the many communities across PEI to have received funding from the Building Canada Fund – Community Component infrastructure program. The Communities Component focuses on projects in communities with populations of less than 100,000, helping these smaller communities face their unique challenges.

“I would like to thank both Minister Shea and MLA Dunsford for taking the time to come out to Georgetown to view our AA Macdonald Memorial Gardens Project. We are pleased to have been able to access funding to help us complete these upgrades to our garden’s water drainage. This will ensure more use of the gardens for upcoming community events and potential expansion. Special thanks to the BCF Program and Government at both the Provincial and Federal levels for making this project possible. A very special thanks to the Public Works Committee, headed by Chairman Wade Williams for their vision and hard work,” said Lewis Lavandier, Mayor of the town of Georgetown.
