The site has been prepared and the foundation will soon be poured for the new Prince Edward (PE) Home, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

“We are very excited about this project,” said Premier Ghiz. “We have been watching with anticipation as it has started to take shape, knowing that it is going to make a big difference to the lives of people in our community.”

“As part of our Healthy Aging Strategy, government is committed to ensuring Islanders have top quality long-term care facilities and services,” said Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram. “This new manor has been designed to maximize space and provide a home-like environment where residents will be comfortable and cared for using best practice in care models.”

The new PE Home, located on Maypoint Road, is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy in the summer of 2013.

The government has adopted current best practices in care for the elderly, especially those with dementia. The new PE Home will consist of 10 small households, each made up of 12 residents. Every resident will have a private room and bathroom. The core of the facilities will house a central kitchen, environmental services, maintenance and other support services. The new facility will provide a home-like atmosphere in a residential living environment.

The PE Home is one of the five facilities being replaced as part of government’s $63 million Manor Replacement Program, one of the pillars of the 2009 Provincial Healthy Aging Strategy.

The program includes replacement of Maplewood Manor, Colville Manor, Summerset Manor, PE Home and Riverview Manor. Each of these new facilities is being designed utilizing best practice in the care of the elderly, and will consist of a dementia friendly environment where resident’s privacy is respected and there is a focus on person-centered care.
