Agriculture and Forestry Minister Eric Hammill announced today that six new research projects have been approved under the Agricultural Research Investment Fund. The projects involve the crop and livestock sectors and the introduction of new technologies.
"Improving the competitive position of the agriculture industry through applied and developmental research is a key priority of the department," said Mr. Hammill. "These industry-led projects will enable producers to take advantage of the latest in production information and technologies."
Two of the projects will examine new crop opportunities. The Maritime Branch of the Canadian Seed Growers Association will research seed production systems of grasses which can be used to increase returns from forages in potato rotations. The other, being conducted by Maurice Vandaele, will evaluate industrial hemp species best suited for production in Prince Edward Island. Hemp has the potential to become a valuable rotational crop.
The Prince Edward Island Dairy Producers Association has received funding to improve the protein quality of locally produced grains through heat-treating, which could reduce the dependence on imported protein feedstuffs. The Association has also received funding for a project to study the selenium status of dairy herds. Selenium status is closely linked with milk quality and herd health.
The Prince Edward Island Cattlemen's Association will evaluate the ability of ultrasonic imaging technology in beef calves to predict carcass traits at slaughter. Under the project, the Atlantic Veterinary College will be introducing the technology to a number of feedlots.
A research project is being undertaken by the Prince Edward Island Sheep Breeders Association to evaluate techniques to accelerate breeding programs, and increase the number of lambs marketed throughout the year.
The Agricultural Research Investment Fund was established by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry to encourage short-term, problem-oriented research with direct application to the industry. Eligible applicants include industry organizations, producers and agri-businesses. The next application deadline is September 1.
