Premier Robert Ghiz says that discussion on the upcoming renewal of federal transfers to the provinces is at the top of his list for the annual meeting of the Council of the Federation taking place later this week in Vancouver.

“I look forward to the discussions as we, as provinces and territories, look at ways to collaborate to strengthen our economies, provide health care to our residents, and improve trade opportunities,” said Premier Robert Ghiz.

Several major transfer agreements are set to expire in 2014. Premiers will begin talks on renewing major transfers to support vital health care and social services, and enable provinces and territories to deliver the services Canadians deserve.

“While it is early days in these discussions, we will be talking about how we can work together to champion a system of federal transfers that strengthens the Canadian federation and achieves Canada’s constitutional objectives,” said Premier Ghiz.

A closing news conference is scheduled for Friday, July 22, in Vancouver.

The Council of the Federation is comprised of all thirteen provincial and territorial premiers. The Council enables premiers to work collaboratively to strengthen the Canadian federation by fostering a constructive relationship among the provinces, territories and the federal government.

In advance of the Council of the Federation Meeting, Canadian Premiers will meet with the leaders of the National Aboriginal Organizations on July 20.
