Residents of eastern Kings County are benefiting from improved safety now that the province has completed work on the replacement of the St. Peters Bridge on Route 2, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley.
“The old St Peters bridge was at the end of its service life and was beginning to show its age,” said Minister MacKinley. “By replacing it we’ve provided drivers with a new bridge that will stand the test of time. It’s also wider than the old bridge which improves safety for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.”
The old St Peters bridge was built in 1964. The province began the $2.1 million replacement project in September 2010 after department officials became aware of damage to the bridge deck.
“I’d like to thank residents of St. Peters, local business owners and regular users of route 2 for all their patience over the course of the replacement project,” said Minister MacKinley. “It wasn’t always easy, but the project is now complete and the community is better for it.”
Since 2007 the province, through Build PEI, has replaced or carried out major repairs on 34 bridge structures. That represents an investment of over $45 million. This year the province will carry out major replacement projects on the Cardigan bridge, Greek River bridge, Point Pleasant bridge and Ross’ Corner bridge.
