A 24-hour problem gambling helpline has been established to provide timely access and support to Islanders seeking assistance, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.
“This confidential telephone service provides immediate advice, information and professional counselling to callers looking for help,” said Minister Bertram. “It is very important for those suffering from a gambling addiction, and their family members, to know help is readily available any time by simply picking up the phone, and our government is committed to ensuring that support is in place.”
Government is following through on its commitment to enhance treatment services as outlined in the 2008 Prince Edward Island Responsible Gaming Strategy. A gambling addictions specialist has been hired to raise awareness about problem gambling and improve treatment services, a group information session to help at-risk gamers is being developed, and the gambling helpline is operating.
“The gambling helpline is answered by social workers with specialized training in problem gambling and crisis intervention,” said Margaret Kennedy, director of mental health and addictions, Health PEI. “In addition to professional counselling, callers can receive an assessment and information about treatment options, such as addiction services and community self-help groups.”
Gambling addiction services on the Island include screening and assessment;
in-patient or out-patient detoxification, if necessary; education sessions; counselling; rehabilitation; aftercare program and long-term follow-up. Services are available at locations across the province.
The toll-free problem gambling helpline number is 1-855-255-4255.
