Island businesses explore the benefits of information and communication technology

An upcoming technology summit will give Island business people the opportunity to learn from local entrepreneurs and business owners about the information and communication technology (ICT) tools that work for their businesses, says Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Alan Campbell.

“The ICT sector has grown to approximately 60 companies over the past number of years on the Island and the industry employs more than 2,000 people,” said Minister Campbell. “Many successful Island businesses have incorporated ICT applications into their work plans. This summit will provide an opportunity for small- and medium-sized business owners to gather tips and information on how to expand their business, reach more clients and improve their day-to-day operation with only a few clicks.”

Innovation PEI will host the Technology Summit: Where Business and Technology Converge on June 21, at the Holland College Charlottetown Center from 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This one-day event is designed to support small- and medium-sized business owners with the adoption and implementation of ICT solutions. Jason Brommet, with Microsoft Canada, will give the keynote address and successful business owners and local experts will lead sessions on a variety of topics including social media, free web tools, going mobile, e-commerce and web-based management and communication.

“My business has grown significantly since the launch of my online services and investing in technology allows me to help more Canadians on the road to better health,” said Rachelle Wood, holistic nutritionist and Island business owner. “Our SeeResults online client management tool has created a technological standard with the nutritional consulting industry. We are breaking new ground and nutritionists are taking notice.”

Sessions will focus on the need to acquire information and be tailored to meet the needs of participating businesses. Presenters will use a hands-on approach and focus mainly on how to implement ICT tools and give simple and easy instructions. Interactive lab sessions will provide participants with useful information and the chance to learn first-hand just how easy ICT adoption really is. There will also be a meet and greet with presenters and exhibitors, providing an opportunity for attendants to ask questions and gain practical advice.
