Residents of Southern Kings County will benefit from the replacement of two aging bridges on Route 17, thanks to investments made through Build PEI, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley.
“This year we will invest $37 million dollars to improve the safety and efficiency of Prince Edward Island’s road and bridge network,” said Minister MacKinley. “Over the coming weeks, many construction jobs will get underway and Islanders will begin to see the benefits of the improvements we plan to make this year.”
Beginning Monday, May 30, crews will begin the replacements of the Greek River bridge and the Point Pleasant bridge, both on Route 17 in southern Kings County. The bridges are about two kilometres apart, and will therefore be replaced one after the other beginning with the Greek River bridge. The two projects combined represent a $1.2 million dollar investment. Crews expect to have the work completed by early fall.
While the bridge replacements are ongoing, a detour will be set up and is as follows:
Vehicles travelling east from Murray River will follow Route 4 north, then take a right on Route 324, the Peters Road, then right onto Route 17a, and follow it until it becomes Route 17. The detour is reversed for vehicles travelling west on Route 17 toward Murray River.
Local access to residences located between the two bridges will be maintained for the duration of the replacement projects. A detailed detour map can be viewed on our online highway construction map at www.gov.pe.ca/tir.
