Paul Smith, Chief of the Charlottetown Police Services is to be congratulated for his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, says Justice and Public Safety Minister Doug W. Currie.

“Chief Smith has a policing career that spans over thirty years on Prince Edward Island, with the last sixteen as Chief of the Charlottetown Police Services,” said Mr. Currie. “He has provided a model of service and leadership that should make us all proud, and I congratulate him on this richly deserved honour.”

The announcement of Chief Smith’s appointment was made on May 16 by Governor General David Johnston. The Order was created in 2000 to recognize conspicuous merit and exceptional service by members and employees of the Canadian police forces whose contributions extend beyond protection of the community.

“It is especially appropriate that this honour would be announced during National Police Week,” said Mr. Currie. National Police Week runs from May 15 to May 21, 2011, and pays tribute to the work of police officers across Canada.

“National Police Week reminds us to stop and express our appreciation for all the dedicated officers who work with our Prince Edward Island police services, in the municipalities of Charlottetown, Summerside, Kensington and Borden-Carleton, the security police officers at UPEI, the instructing officers at the Atlantic Police Academy and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police,” said Minister Currie. “Their hard work, professionalism and courage help to keep our One Island Community safe.”
