Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012 is coming to Prince Edward Island this February, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

“Canadian hockey fans can mark February 2012 in their calendars, as this year Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will be hosted right here in Prince Edward Island,” said Premier Ghiz. “Islanders have a very strong culture of involvement in hockey, whether it is in the excitement and thrills of watching our young boys and girls participate in local arenas, or watching our very own home grown talent as they compete on the national and international stage. Hosting Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada on Prince Edward Island will allow us to celebrate this culture and show our support for the game in true Island fashion.”

Last night, the CBC announced Prince Edward Island will host the network’s annual Hockey Day in Canada, a special segment of its hugely popular Hockey Night in Canada program that will include games featuring Canada’s NHL teams and will include footage of related events in Prince Edward Island.

“Islanders and hockey fans from across the nation will come together to celebrate our national pastime,” said Premier Ghiz. “Prince Edward Island has a rich tradition of hosting hockey-elated events and the Province of Prince Edward Island is pleased to partner with Hockey PEI on this initiative. I want to congratulate Hockey PEI and all their partners on the successful bid to host this event.”

Hockey PEI will lead the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), who will be responsible for coordinating the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebration. The celebration has become more than just a single-day event, the LOC will engage the entire hockey community across Prince Edward Island with a variety of events and community-driven activities.
