Province invests in new ski lift for Brookvale park

The provincial government is investing in a new ski lift in Brookvale as part of its commitment to building a stronger parks system across Prince Edward Island, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey.

“Brookvale is home to Prince Edward Island’s only alpine ski hill and is an integral part of our provincial park system,” said Mr. Vessey. “Our provincial parks are not only a vital contributor to our tourism industry, they are also enjoyed by many Islanders all year long.”

The provincial government is investing $175,000 in the new carpet lift, which will replace the handle tow on the training run. A carpet lift is a belt placed along an alpine run that moves skiers up the hill until they reach the top and slide into the snow.

Carpet lifts are easier to use and can accommodate a larger number of riders than the existing handle tow lift. The new lift will also improve access for skiers with disabilities.

“This is the largest single investment in Brookvale since the quad chair lift was installed in 1991,” said Minister Vessey. “This investment in a new ski lift will lead to improved services for Islanders and visitors.”

The tender for the project has been awarded to Magic Carpet and it’s expected the lift will be operational for the beginning of the 2011-12 ski season.
