Communities can play a powerful role in preventing and ending family violence, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

Premier Ghiz has proclaimed the week of February 13 to 19, 2011 as Family Violence Prevention Week on Prince Edward Island.

“We can all help to prevent family violence. Through education and awareness, we can help our neighbours, friends and families end violence in our Island communities,” said Premier Ghiz.

Reducing family violence is the ongoing focus of the Premier’s Action Committee. The committee, along with community partners, have developed various materials with important information about the options available to those who have been affected by family violence. New this year is information on how to help prevent and respond to abuse in your community. This information is available on the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention website at www.stopfamilyviolence.pe.ca .

In partnership with various community organizations, the Premier’s Action Committee has helped coordinate many events for this week including the Walk of Silence for Victims of Family Violence. The Walk and reception takes place on February 17 at noon, beginning at Province House (snow date is February 18 at noon). Many government and community leaders will take part, including Premier Ghiz and Minister of Community Services, Seniors and Labour Janice Sherry who also has responsibility for the Status of Women.

“Family violence begins in the home but its effects are felt throughout the community and in the workplace,” said Minister Sherry. “Please join us in honouring the victims of family violence, and creating awareness about an issue that affects our entire One Island Community.”
