Health PEI Undergoes Accreditation Process

Accreditation Canada surveyors were in Prince Edward Island September 26 to October 1 visiting health facilities, evaluating patient and client programs and services, as well as examining our administrative and support services within Health PEI. Ten surveyors, experts within their field including physicians, nurses, administrators, lab technologists, and a pharmacist, traveled across Prince Edward Island conducting the on-site survey.

Accreditation is a voluntary national program that assesses health organizations against national standards of excellence. The organization uses the results of the accreditation process and on-site visits to foster ongoing quality improvement in the services they provide to patients and clients.

The final report and Accreditation decision for Health PEI will be completed and publicly released in November.

Keith Dewar, Health PEI CEO, says the Accreditation process is extremely important.

“We will receive valuable feedback from the report which will allow us to continue to improve patient care and safety, and it also gives us an opportunity to recognize our strengths in the system. The Accreditation process is one tool we use to assess the quality and safety of the services we provide everyday and it assures the public and our health providers that our health services are on track with the services being provided across the country.”

Dedication to improving quality and patient safety within Health PEI is a continuous, collaborative effort. The accreditation component is an opportunity to validate our progress in the on-going effort to improve the delivery of health services throughout the province. The on-site survey includes participation and input from physicians, staff, volunteers, patients, clients, partners and the public.

“I want to thank everyone who was involved in the preparations leading up to and during the survey visit. I also want to thank our patients, clients and community partners who generously shared their experiences with the surveyors during their visit to our health facilities,” says Dewar. “The process is very collaborative and the results and recommendations will become key in our ongoing quality improvement programs.”

Accreditation Canada is a national, non-profit independent organization whose role is to help organizations across Canada and internationally examine and improve the quality of care and service they provide to their clients.
