Minister Vessey Encourages Islanders of All Ages to Get Caught Reading During Canadian Library Month

* Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]
Librarians across the province are out looking for Islanders who are caught reading in public places during October which is Canadian Library Month, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Vessey.

“The Get Caught Reading Program encourages Islanders to be active readers and to make reading a part of their daily lives, inside and outside of the library,” said Minister Vessey. “Throughout October, library teams are visiting communities across PEI and handing out prizes to people they catch reading in public. Libraries continue to be an integral part of our community and society.”

The theme of Canadian Library Month is: Your Library, Your World: Opening Doors to the Future. Organizers hope to show Canadians that libraries can introduce new ideas and new stories into their lives through both traditional and emerging technologies.

More than one third of Islanders have a library card and the Provincial Library Service circulates over 800,000 books, CDs and audio-books annually through its 26 branches. Libraries are key partners in supporting literacy, and they are leaders in providing Canadians with equal access to information.

The Fall Program Guide contains a full list of Library Month activities in Prince Edward Island and library events throughout the fall. It is available at local libraries and on the library website at www.library.pe.ca. Islanders are encouraged to call (902) 961-7320 for more information about these programs or to locate a library branch.
