Two new Dual-Lane Roundabouts set to open on Riverside Drive

It is very important that Islanders take a few minutes over the coming days to educate themselves on the proper use of dual-lane roundabouts, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley.

“The Department has produced a great deal of public information on how to properly navigate a dual-lane roundabout,” says Minister MacKinley. “We urge people to learn the rules before using the roundabouts on Riverside Drive.”

Later this morning, crews from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal will install pavement markings on two new dual-lane roundabouts on Riverside Drive. Up until now, the unfinished roundabouts have been operating as single-lane roundabouts. Once the markings are installed late Friday, they will operate as dual-lane roundabouts. While the markings are being installed, drivers are asked to use caution and drive with care on Riverside Drive.

To educate the public on the proper use of dual-lane roundabouts, the province has set up a website with a detailed flash animation instructional program provided by the Region of Waterloo. The program gives examples of all types of movements through a dual-lane roundabout for cars, trucks, bicycles and pedestrians. The website can be found at www.gov.pe.ca/roundabouts. As well, all Access PEI offices now offer two instructional pamphlets that outline the rules of the road for single- and dual-lane roundabouts. These pamphlets are also on the website.

“We are confident these new dual-lane roundabouts will improve efficiency on this very busy stretch of highway,” said Mr. MacKinley. “For the safety of all drivers, we urge people to become informed about how to properly use the new roundabouts. We also ask that drivers use caution in the area over the coming weeks as drivers become familiar with the rules.”
