The Eastern Kings Sportsplex has been awarded $10,000 through the Province’s Community Recreation Support Program for Arena Support 2010/11, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.
“The purpose of this program is to support the operations of existing community arenas that provide programs and services that will increase the physical activity levels within communities,” said Minister Bertram.
Eastern Kings Sportsplex was founded in 1978 with the primary purpose of supplying the town with an ice rink. The facility has grown over the years and now includes an ice surface which is used for public skates, hockey teams, figure skating clubs, skating lessons and curling, as well as bowling lanes, a walking track and a fitness centre.
“Recreational facilities across our One Island Community, such as the Eastern Kings Sportsplex, play an important part in the health and wellness of Islanders,” said Minister Bertram. “These facilities promote sport, recreation and community spirit. I am pleased that our Government is able to support this facility as it continues to foster active lifestyles for the residents of Souris and surrounding areas.”
