This week, Island educators will have an opportunity to hear from well-renowned speakers on ways to collaborate with their colleagues and improve learning outcomes for Island students, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister, Doug Currie.
“Every school across the province has embraced the goal of school development,” said Mr. Currie. “Earlier this summer, I hosted a Summit on Learning. Over those two days, I heard from students, teachers and parents about the need to build on what we are already doing in Island schools to support our children and youth for future success. The ‘Better Together’ workshop being held this week will help support the initiatives already in place in Island schools. It will help foster new and effective ways for teachers to work in a collaborative way to better meet the needs of Island students.”
This year, the province has invited Wayne Hulley, President of Canadian Effective Schools Inc., to speak at the upcoming professional development day for Island teachers on September 2 and 3. In his presentation, Mr. Hulley will provide research and the practical examples of how working together is better for both teachers and students. He will also discuss “Effective Schools,” what the characteristics of these schools are and how educators on Prince Edward Island can work together to make their schools more effective.
Mr. Hulley has worked with schools and school districts across Canada and the United States. He has presented at major conferences and is a sought-after keynote speaker and facilitator.
Teachers with the la Commission scolaire de langue française de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard will have a similar presentation from Jim Howden, the principal consultant with Mosaique Educational Consultants Inc. Mr. Howden has held a number of workshops and developed courses on cooperative small group learning, effective learning, conflict resolution, classroom management and creating a culture of collaboration within a school team. He has had speaking engagements across Canada, the United States as well as France and Switzerland.
