Sheep Producers Get Help With Protection From Predators

* Agriculture and Forestry [to May 2015]
The Prince Edward Island Sheep Breeders Association has received funding under the federal-provincial Growing Forward program to protect sheep from potential diseases carried by both predatorial and non-predatorial species. The project will provide partial funding for the construction or upgrade of a five-strand, high-tensile electric fence.

One of the more common threats to the health of sheep comes from dogs or coyotes who may carry a parasite. Another disease that can be transferred from other species is rabies. Fencing will help protect sheep from coming into contact with disease-carrying animals.

To apply for funding, producers must be members of the Sheep Breeders Association, have a minimum flock of 15 breeding animals and attend one of two biosecurity sessions. The sessions will be held August 24 and September 14 at the Atlantic Veterinary College from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The sessions will include a lecture by Dr. Jeff Wichtel and a field tour with a fencing representative.

Membership in the association can be obtained at the sessions.

Those interested in attending are asked to call the Department of Agriculture at 368-4145 or toll-free at 1-866-734-3276.
