Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan is a very deserving recipient of the 2010 Excellence in Service Award for the municipal sector says Justice and Public Safety Minister Doug Currie.
“Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan has made a significant contribution to our community both personally and professionally,” says Minister Currie. “The Excellence in Service Award recognizes his dedication to community safety and crime prevention as well as his motivating influence on the residents of Charlottetown and his fellow members of the city police organization.”
Deputy Chief McGuigan initiated and revitalized a broad scope of innovative programs. He established the Downtown Depot which has evolved into a year-round community outreach location for police and other community interactions. He rejuvenated existing community programs in partnership with area businesses including Neighbourhood Watch and Operations ID. Under his leadership, the Parenting Techniques program expanded and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) course is delivered to an increasing number of Grade six students. He also initiated innovative programs such as a bicycle registration program and a soon-to-roll-out Graffiti Awareness program.
“Deputy Chief McGuigan has been successful in engaging citizens, business operators and fellow police officers to take action in crime prevention and community safety,” says Minister Currie. “His enthusiasm and hard work is a key factor in making our community a safe and caring place to live and work.”
D.C. McGuigan also received the 2010 Minister of Justice Policing Award recently for his creative approach to helping youth involved in the justice system improve their circumstances by giving them an opportunity to be involved with horses on his farm in Mt. Herbert.
Deputy Chief McGuigan is a 25-year veteran with Charlottetown Police Services. He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief of Charlottetown Police Services in 2009 and is in charge of Operations and Community policing.
