The Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation (PEITF) is very deserving of the recognition they have received from the Canadian Educational Press Association for creating awareness of the school experience across our province, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.

“I would like to congratulate the PEITF on receiving the National Award of Excellence,” said Mr. Currie. “The ‘Take an MLA to School’ campaign really opened the eyes of MLAs who have not been a part of the school system in recent years. Even in the short time that I have been out of the classroom, education and learning has evolved significantly. Congratulations to the PEITF for a well thought out campaign that has made a lasting impact on MLAs and the public.”

The Canadian Educational Press Association (CEPA) awarded the PEITF the National Award of Excellence for Public Advocacy and Media Relations for its “Take an MLA to School” campaign. The CEPA judges called it a well organized, planned and executed event. They gave it a score of 19 out of a possible 20 points.

“We are extremely pleased with the recognition,” said Carrie St. Jean, president of the PEITF. “We could not have asked for a better outcome, and we recognize that this would not have been possible without the participation and cooperation of our Island MLAs. Having all 27 MLAs participate in this campaign shows the level of commitment that government has for education on Prince Edward Island.”

The PEITF organized the “Take and MLA to School” campaign and, last February, Island MLAs attended a full day of classes in a local school. The Federation is now working on a new and innovative campaign to run next year.
