Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning Awards Craft Education Bursaries

Holly McGee and Krista MacKenzie have received this year’s Craft Education Awards, says Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allan Campbell.

“The government of Prince Edward Island is committed to building a brighter and more prosperous future,” said Minister Campbell. “We recognize education is a driving force in the success and growth of the craft industry.”

The Craft Education Award Program is a Business Development Program that aims to increase the number of qualified, full-time craft producers in PEI to fulfil the demand for Island-made products for sale within, and export from, the province.

This year’s recipients, Holly McGee and Krista MacKenzie, received their awards today from Minister Campbell at Happy Glass on Victoria Row; a second year recipient, Alexis Bulman is practicing her craft during a Summer Workplace Program.

“This year’s recipients will have the opportunity to study at a recognized school of craft and design and develop the skills and knowledge required to work in their field,” said Minister Campbell. “Seeing the progress Ms. Bulman has made from student to craftsperson exemplifies the success of this program.”

Holly McGee’s art has included knitting, photography and leather-work, and she is an invaluable part of the Island’s arts scene from her volunteering to her artwork and participation in exhibitions.

Krista MacKenzie designs, welds and works with precious metals to create functional and sculptural objects. Her creations fill a new demand for unique pieces from chain maille gloves for mussel factory managers, to custom-made jewellery.

Minister Campbell congratulated the recipients and wished them luck in their future study of craft.

The Government of Prince Edward Island is working to offer educational opportunities for Island craftspeople that will encourage the industry to grow.

Successful applicants attend a recognized school of Craft and Design within Canada. Holly McGee will attend the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Krista MacKenzie will attend the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The program has supported 20 recipients since its inception in 2000. This year, there are four recipients, two new and two returning.
