Students’ Lanterns Provide Beautiful Welcome to Cirque du Soleil

* Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]
Elementary school children from grades 1 to 6 have embraced their own creativity and imagination in preparation for Cirque du Soleil’s inaugural special performance in the Maritimes. The world-famous Cirque du Soleil will be unveiling its unique special event on Wednesday, and they will be greeted as they parade along Great George Street that evening with close to 150 lanterns, masks and poems made by students from around the province.

“We have had a great response from students and teachers on this project, and I’m delighted to see all of the hard work and creativity that has gone into these works of art,” said Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Doug Currie. “Cirque du Soleil is known around the world for its artistry and we’re very proud that our students were able to learn more about the troupe, and to reflect that in their own creations.”

The lanterns, masks and poetry were submitted after the province unveiled a ‘welcome lantern challenge’ in early June. From the submissions, three lucky students were randomly selected to receive a weekend pass to Summerfest for a family of four. The winners were Maddie Hogan, a Grade 1 student from Montague Consolidated, Grade 2 student Jacob Gamble, also of Montague Consolidated, and Lauren Rafuse of Charlottetown.

"The Department of Tourism and Culture recognizes the creative impact that Cirque du Soleil can have on everyone who has the opportunity to learn about the troupe or to watch a performance," added Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Vessey. "By participating in the ‘welcome lantern challenge,’ Island students have proven their own creativity through their imaginative works of art and poetry."

Since 1984, Cirque du Soleil shows have entertained more than 90 million people around the world. Now, this special Prince Edward Island themed event will thrill Islanders and visitors alike with its blend of acrobatics, circus performance, dance, music and more. Never to be seen anywhere else, this “made for PEI” live outdoor event will have three performances on the Historic Charlottetown waterfront beginning at 9:15 p.m. on June 30, July 2 & 4.
