Tourist Home Liquor License Amended

A recently approved amendment to the Liquor Control Act Regulations will now allow bed & breakfast properties with three units to be considered for a Tourist Home Liquor License.

Hon. Robert Vessey, Minister Responsible for the PEI Liquor Control Commission, stated that the lowering of the previous minimum four-unit requirement was in response to requests from operators who wanted to be able to provide their guests with an alcoholic beverage, as an additional personalized hospitality service. The Minister also indicated that the room requirement reduction was endorsed by the Board of Quality Tourism Services Inc., the Island’s quality assurance organization, which had informed the Commission that 56 bed & breakfast properties have only three units.

“Bed & breakfast properties are an integral component of PEI’s accommodation sector. Reducing the licensing eligibility requirement will assist these premises in their marketing strategies to increase guest numbers and provide improved service,” said Minister Vessey. “Our other requirements to obtain a Tourist Home Liquor License will remain in place, including the requirement that such premises must have a Canada Select Designation as determined by Quality Tourism Services Inc. This will ensure that only rated accommodations continue to be licensed by the Liquor Control Commission.”
