Saturday, May 29, 2010 marks the 10th anniversary for the Emergency 9-1-1 Service in Prince Edward Island. Attorney General Hon. Doug Currie is taking this opportunity to recognize the contributions of 911 call-takers for their efforts in providing the vital and life-saving service for Islanders throughout the past 10 years.

Since its inception, the Emergency 911 Service has processed more than 300,000 calls. Call-takers are the first point of contact for anyone who calls 911 for emergency assistance. The call-takers determine the nature of an emergency, confirm the location where help is needed and put the caller in contact with the appropriate emergency service responder.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the men and women who answer 911 calls and dispatch fire, police, and ambulance,” said Minister Currie, Minister Responsible for Public Safety, “I also want to extend a sincere thank you to the emergency responders in our province, and to everyone who works for the safety of Islanders and visitors.”

The Attorney General is reminding Islanders that emergency responders need to be able to see civic number signs when responding to an emergency. “Civic addressing is the foundation of the E 9-1-1 system and is dependant on the support and cooperation of everyone,” he said. “I urge Islanders to ensure civic number signs are clearly displayed and visible from the road.”
