Over the coming weeks, major road construction projects are set to get underway across Prince Edward Island. With that in mind, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal reminds Islanders to slow down and use caution in construction zones.
“This time of year it’s very important that drivers be patient and mindful of the dangers of construction zones,” says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley. “Workers on construction sites are vulnerable to vehicles travelling at high speeds so, for their safety and the safety of other road users, it’s very important that drivers slow down.”
The province recently enacted legislation that doubled speeding fines in construction zones. That change was made to help encourage drivers to take their time when travelling through job sites.
Major construction is set to get underway this week on several of the bigger jobs happening throughout the province this year including the expansion of the Charlottetown Perimeter Highway at Riverside Drive, the reconstruction of Route 3 from Cherry Valley to Vernon River and the reconstruction of Route 2 in Pleasant Valley. Drivers should expect delays when approaching these sites. Work is also well underway to reconstruct route 1a in Albany and Main Street in Souris.
