Increase to Social Assistance Shelter Allowance Rate

* Community Services and Seniors [to May 2015]
Shelter Allowance rates for social assistance clients will increase by two per cent effective June 1, 2010, announced Honourable Janice Sherry, Minister of Community Services, Seniors and Labour.

“Our Government is committed to helping Islanders during their times of need, and we are pleased to announce this increase to social assistance clients for shelter allowance,” said Minister Sherry. “We know that adequate, affordable housing promotes the safety, comfort, health, and well-being of all Islanders, including children, families, seniors and persons with disabilities, and by raising the rate for shelter allowance we are responding to the needs of vulnerable Islanders.”

The two per cent increase to the shelter rate represents a $270,600 investment for 2010/2011. Since 2007, The Social Assistance Shelter Rate has increased by 11 per cent, to match the allowable rent increases approved by the Island Regulatory Appeals Commission (IRAC).

Social Assistance rates are reviewed according to the regulations of the Social Assistance Act. Increases are considered in terms of departmental and governmental priorities.

The decision to increase the shelter allowance rate aligns well with the work of the Disability Action Council and recommendations presented in the Disability Services Review which was completed in 2009.

Social assistance provides eligible clients with financial support with their shelter costs based on type of accommodation and family size.
