Infrastructure Projects Completed in Montague, Prince Edward Island

* Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal [to May 2015]
The town of Montague is benefitting from improved road infrastructure and water distribution services, thanks to investments made under the Building Canada Fund and Build PEI.

The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, the Honourable Ron MacKinley, PEI Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, and Mayor Richard Collins recently visited the completed projects.

“Our government is proud to invest in infrastructure projects that enhance the quality of life for Islanders,” said Minister Ashfield. “We are pleased to partner with our provincial and municipal counterparts to improve infrastructure in our rural communities.”

Montague is among the many rural communities across PEI to have received funding from the BCF infrastructure program. The Communities Component focuses on projects in communities with populations of less than 100,000 – helping these smaller communities face their unique challenges.

“Rural communities like Montague are vital to the economic prosperity of the province,” says Minister MacKinley. “Projects like these strengthen our rural communities by encouraging active living and by helping to provide clean water to residents.”

The Government of Canada, through the Building Canada Fund, the Province of PEI, through its Build PEI initiative, and the Town of Montague shared the cost of the local road and sidewalk upgrade and water distribution projects. Both projects combined were approved for over

$2.4 million. The local road and sidewalk upgrades help to improve traffic flow within the town, encouraging residents to walk rather than drive to local destinations, while the water distribution improvement gives town residents central access to a safe drinking water supply.

“Residents of Montague are very impressed with the street and sidewalk upgrades as they improve the look of the waterfront area and provide incentive to walk rather than drive,” says Montague Mayor Richard Collins. “The additional water distribution will also provide a secure and clean source of drinking water for hundreds of residents.”
