The Prince Edward Island web site has been very successful in promoting PEI as a place to visit, a place to do business and in providing information about PEI. Last year, 13 percent of all those who obtained travel information before they came to the Island, used the Internet to do so. More and more in the future, the Internet will be used as a means of obtaining information.
"I am very proud of what our web site has to offer," said Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "I am not the only one who appreciates our web site. Recently, CNET, which is one of the leading web sites on the Internet, did a review of Provincial Government web sites and ranked the sites according to a five-star rating. One province received five stars — Prince Edward Island."
Three provinces — Newfoundland, Manitoba and Saskatchewan — received two stars. Alberta received three stars. British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia all received four stars.
Mitchell Brown, the Canadian Technology Editor made the following comments regarding the PEI web site in his five star review:
Finally, we have proof that size isn't everything; at least, not when it comes to creating a web site. PEI's official site is, simply put, the best of the lot. More of a provincial info kiosk than a strictly governmental site, the Prince Edward Island Information Centre stands out as the smoothest conglomerate of governmental, tourism, business and cultural information you're likely to find....
"As Islanders I think we should be very proud of our Internet site," added MacAleer. "We have a number of accomplishments including being the first province in the country to provide real audio access to the provincial legislature so Internet users with the appropriate hardware and software can hear these proceedings live or on an archived basis. We are also the first to provide integrated mapping."
