February 19, 2010 * Education and Early Childhood Development [to May 2015]Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie acknowledged today the success of the recent PEI Teachers’ Federation Take Your MLA to School Day. Minister Currie expressed appreciation to the Teachers’ Federation on behalf of all MLAs. “We really enjoyed the day and all MLAs would like to thank the teachers for making them feel so welcome in their schools, he said. “The event was extremely successful in raising awareness of the great things that teachers are doing every day in our classrooms and the challenges they face while striving to meet the needs of each student.” The 27 Members of the Legislative Assembly were invited to participate in the event on February 16. They were paired with teachers in schools throughout the Island. The day was designed to help them gain a deeper understanding of some of the major challenges facing the education system such as inclusive education, classroom composition and teacher workload. “The teachers were certainly successful in reaching their objectives,” said Minister Currie. “I am sure that this first-hand look at what is happening inside our classrooms will go a long way when the time comes for MLAs to support decisions that impact teaching and learning.” Minister Currie commended the teachers for providing MLAs with the opportunity to take a closer look at Prince Edward Island’s education system which serves over 20,000 students and has an annual operating budget of approximately $207 million.
