Earlier this week, Premier Robert Ghiz officially proclaimed the week of February 14 to 20, 2010, as Family Violence Prevention Week on Prince Edward Island.

“Family Violence knows no boundaries,” said Premier Robert Ghiz. “I urge our entire One Island Community to become educated and aware of all forms of domestic violence, so that we may better protect our most vulnerable Islanders.”

The Premier’s Action Committee was renewed for a five-year term this past April. As part of its ongoing focus on reducing family violence, the Committee along with community partners, have developed various materials with important information about the options available to those who have been affected by family violence. This information is available electronically on the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention website at www.stopfamilyviolence.pe.ca

In partnership with various community organizations, the Premier’s Action Committee has assembled many events planned for this week including the Walk of Silence for Victims of Family Violence. The Walk takes place on February 18 at noon, beginning at Province House (snow date February 19 at noon), and will attended by various dignitaries including Hon. Janice Sherry, Minister of Community Services, Seniors, Labour and the Status of Women.

“Please join me in honouring the victims of family violence, and creating awareness about this horrible issue that affects us our entire One Island Community,” said Minister Sherry. “As Islanders it is our civic duty to offer support to those affected by family violence.”
