Islanders are encouraged to thank teachers and school staff for a job well done during Teacher and School Staff Appreciation Week February 14 to 20, 2010, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.
“We are lucky to have so many professional and caring teachers in PEI who go above and beyond the call of duty every day to nurture learning and to help students reach their full potential,” said Minister Currie. “I encourage parents and all Islanders to take the time this week to express their appreciation to a teacher, a school bus driver, or one of the many school support staff who make a real difference in the lives of our children.”
There are over 1,535 full-time equivalent teachers employed in the Prince Edward Island school system, as well as 312 educational assistants and youth workers, 281 school bus drivers, 110 administrative staff, and 206 custodial and maintenance staff.
Minister Currie acknowledged the many activities being organized by students and parents this week whether they are preparing potluck lunches for teachers, decorating staff rooms or taking over playground supervision. “Parents and students are to be commended for the great things they do to make this a special week in their schools. What teachers and staff appreciate most is simply being told that they are doing a good job and that their efforts are appreciated,” said the minister.
During the week, the PEI Home and School Federation will present its Extra Mile Awards which recognize a teacher or staff member in the Eastern School District and Western School Board who go the “extra mile” for their students.
