An event held Wednesday to promote increased cultural awareness on Prince Edward Island was a great success, says Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning Allan Campbell.
The first International Tea House of the season was held last night at the Holland College Tourism and Culinary Centre. Minister Campbell brought words of welcome to the event, which was organized by the Prince Edward Island International Friendship Association.
“Government is very pleased to support the International Tea House,” said Minister Campbell. “Coming together to share things that all cultures have in common, like music and food, is an excellent way to build connections between newcomers and longer-established Islanders.”
This is the 12th year that the International Tea House has been held. The event showcases artists and chefs from a wide variety of cultures, with the goal of creating friendships between newly arrived immigrants and Islanders. The Tea House’s popularity has grown steadily, and attendance has reached 200 -300 people for each event. Organizers have planned six International Tea Houses to be held this year.
Through the Population Secretariat, the provincial government provided financial support to assist the PEI International Friendship Association to put on this year’s events.
“The International Tea House adds to our local culture and helps develop community spirit,” said Minister Campbell. “I wish the PEI International Friendship Association all the best with the upcoming Tea Houses.”
The next International Tea House will be held on February 6 from 7-9 p.m. at the Confederation Centre in Memorial Hall.
