2010 marks another significant year for road construction on Prince Edward Island. The Province plans to spend almost $56 million on roads and bridges during the upcoming construction season. And tomorrow, the provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal issues its first round of road and bridge construction tenders.
“This government has made road and bridge construction and repair a priority in its efforts to build One Island Community,” says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley. “This province needs quality roads and bridges for the safe and efficient movement of people and products, and this government has responded to that need like never before through its Build PEI campaign.”
A few of the highlights in the first round of tenders include:
• Further work on Route 2, with the addition of a left-hand turn lane at the MacAdam Road in Canavoy, storm sewer replacement and re-paving along 2 kilometres in Richmond and full reconstruction of almost a kilometre of highway in Springfield.
• Road widening and the addition of paved shoulders along 3.2 kilometres of Route 25 in Covehead Road.
• Rehabilitation of 3.3 kilometres of roadway along Route 225 near Shamrock.
• Rehabilitation of 2 kilometres of roadway along Route 3 in Vernon River.
“These projects were all approved with the safety of Islanders in mind,” says Minister MacKinley. “Whether it’s the addition of an extra lane for safer left-hand turns, or the addition of paved shoulders to improve safety for farm equipment, we’re always looking at ways to make Island roads safer for everyone.”
