Take Our Kids to Work Invites Career Exploration

* Education and Early Childhood Development [to May 2015]
Take Our Kids to Work Day is a great opportunity for parents to help children explore career possibilities says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Gerard Greenan.

“This is a practical way for young people to explore career ideas and to connect what they learn in the classroom with the essential skills required in the workplace,” says Minister Greenan. “Take our Kids To Work Day provides an important opportunity for students to learn what education and training are required for jobs they may choose to do in the future. It is also helpful to see first-hand how people contribute daily to their workplace and their community,” he said.

Many grade nine students from across the province spend the day in the workplace with their parents or other volunteer host employees. Professionals in all sectors including arts, education, healthcare, childcare, business, hospitality, technology and government will introduce students to some aspects of their workday. Students prepare a report about their workday learning when they return to their classroom.

Students visiting the government complex in Charlottetown gathered as a group for a career development session in the morning and returned to the workplace with their parent or volunteer host for the afternoon. The session encouraged students to think about how their skills and interests might empower them for their preferred futures and prepared them to maximize their learning with their workplace host.

“I want to thank the many employers and employees throughout our Island community who are hosting students in the workplace today,” said Minister Greenan. “I wish everyone involved a great day.”
