November 2, 2009 * Education and Early Childhood Development [to May 2015]The professional development day for teachers and school staff that was scheduled for Friday, November 6 has been postponed and regular classes will be held on Thursday and Friday. This will enable H1N1 vaccination clinics for children in grades one to three to be held Thursday and Friday, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Gerard Greenan. “This was a joint decision that was made by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the three school boards to enable the vaccination clinics to be held at schools as soon as possible. The PD day will be scheduled later this school year,” said Minister Greenan. “We appreciate the cooperation we have received from the PEI Teachers’ Federation and CUPE in this decision.” In the Western School Board, the parent-teacher interviews that were to be held at all schools on Thursday will be rescheduled to a later date. Consequently there will be regular classes at all schools in the Western School Board on Thursday and Friday. In the Eastern School District, there will be regular classes at all schools Thursday except Westwood Primary, Southern Kings Consolidated, Georgetown Elementary and Cardigan Consolidated where PD sessions and parent-teacher interviews will go ahead. Vaccination clinics will be held in these schools Friday. Regular classes will be held at all schools in the Eastern School District Friday. Some schools are now finding it difficult to get substitute teachers and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is taking steps to ensure that substitute teachers are available. “We are reviewing our fall calendar of professional development and in-service activities and we are scheduling only those that are absolutely necessary in order to free up substitute teachers for schools,” he said.
