PEI Fisheries and Environment Minister Kevin MacAdam announced today that the Department will be sponsoring a workshop on "The Operation of Lobster Pounds" on March 18th & 19th, 1998 at the Atlantic Veterinary College. This workshop will be delivered by the Canadian Aquaculture Institute and the Lobster Health Research Centre through funding under the Regional Economic Development Agreement.
The workshop will be directed toward lobster pound operators and personnel employed in the lobster processing industry.
A similar workshop on this topic was delivered at the Atlantic Veterinary College in the spring of 1994. "Since that time, there has been a great deal of support from the industry for a similar workshop and the decision was made to organize another workshop this year" said Mr. MacAdam.
Over the two day period various speakers from the private sector and, as well, the Atlantic Veterinary College will cover a range of topics including; the various types of lobster pounds, water pumping systems, aeration, and filtration of water supply, refrigeration of water, water quality monitoring, health assessment, holding, handling and shipping practices.
Anyone wanting to attend the "Operation of Lobster Pounds" Workshop should contact Lloyd Murphy of my Department at (902) 368-5259 or Bob Johnston at the Canadian Aquaculture Institute (902) 628-4336.
Participants are asked to register by March 12, 1998.
