Deal Struck To Secure Future Of Basin Head Wharf

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Labour and M.P. for Cardigan, on behalf of the Honourable David Anderson, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Honourable Michael Currie, the Minister of Transportation and Public Works today announced the transfer of ownership of the Basin Head wharf to the province of Prince Edward Island.

The transfer is part of the recreational harbours divestiture program administered by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Under the agreement with DFO, the province will become the legal owner of the wharf and DFO will repair the wharf at Basin Head and bring it up to an acceptable standard.

"As a result of our program, we are able to ensure that the future of management of this important facility and infrastructure is carried out by those who are closer to the communities," Mr. Anderson said. Mr. MacAulay added, "this is another example of how well the different levels of government can work together in cooperation to ensure that the local community benefits. Basin Head is a unique and important tourist destination."

"This is good news for the province of PEI. Basin Head is a vital component of the Island's tourism appeal. Its beautiful beach and amenities have been enjoyed by many residents and visitors over the years," said Minister Currie.

This agreement is welcomed by business owners operating on the Basin Head site as the wharf structure is vital to their continued business growth.

"Basin Head is a focal point of the Eastern Kings area. We are pleased that the long-term viability of the wharf has been assured," said Andy Mooney, MLA for Souris-Elmira.

Minister MacAulay and Minister Currie were present for the announcement at the Johnny Ross Young Regional Services Centre in Souris. Representatives from the Eastern Kings Regional Development Corporation were also present.
