Three Island organizations announced today their intention to combine resources and create a new business partnership -- "Island Systems Solutions Inc." (ISSI). Island Tel Advanced Solutions, Watts Communications and Holland College have agreed to establish a business which develops information technology solutions for the telecommunications and direct marketing/direct response industries.
"Information technology is a rapidly growing industry and the establishment of Island Systems Solutions illustrates the ability for Prince Edward Island's business sector to maintain a leading edge in today's changing technology," said Premier Pat Binns.
The establishment of ISSI is based primarily on the needs of the Herbert A. Watts group of companies, owners of Watts Communications, who currently rely on temporary agency staff to provide immediate solutions to pressing internal and client problems.
"By developing ISSI, Watts Communications will now be able to provide a higher quality of service to our client base," said Colin Taylor, President of Watts Communications. "To date, our partnerships with Holland College and Island Tel and the support from the provincial government have been second-to-none. We hope that the establishment of ISSI will build on our previous successes."
Bernie MacIntyre, President of Island Tel Advanced Systems, is also pleased with the partnership. "This is a unique relationship with three partners working together to create new business for the province," said MacIntyre. "At Island Tel Advanced Solutions, we are excited about this new venture and look forward to its prosperous future."
Keith Dewar, Vice President of Holland College, noted that "ISSI is another example of the College creating quality training opportunities for students and staff through innovative partnerships with industry. When Watts approached us with this concept, the potential benefits were obvious. Students and staff will have the opportunity to further develop their Information Technology skills while working on real projects with a leader in the industry. Our support for this project also reflects the strategic role that Holland College plays in the development of the knowledge economy on PEI."
ISSI is located on Watts Avenue in the West Royalty Industrial Park. Currently, there are 15 people employed and that is expected to grow to 25 by year two.
"The decision to establish ISSI is a boost to both the Island economy and the technology industry on PEI," said Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "This new partnership provides employment that PEI institutions can train potential employees for. In addition, these highly trained individuals will have choices for jobs on PEI rather than leaving to look for work. This is a very positive step."
