Queens Region Board Members Appointed

Health and Social Services Minister Mildred Dover announced the appointment of several new members to the Queens Region Health Board today.

Sylvia Poirier, R.N., B.N., M.N. of Stanley Bridge will act as Board Chair. Ms. Poirier is currently employed as Learning Manager of the Holland College Nursing Assistant Program. In addition to her nursing experience, she has an extensive health background having acted as provincial coordinator of the Partners for Living program, clinical and classroom nursing instructor and sessional nursing professor at the University of New Brunswick. Ms. Poirier has held several senior positions with voluntary health and professional organizations. She is a past Board member of the Heart and Stroke Foundation at the provincial and national levels, the PEI Red Cross Association, Canadian Nurses Association and the Association of Nurses of PEI.

Also named to the board are Dr. James Murphy, D.D.S. of Springvale; Terry Palmer, C.A of Charlottetown; Mrs. Margaret Jay, R.N. of Cornwall; and Dr. Mitchell Zelman, M.D. of Charlottetown.

Minister Dover advised that the group will bring a variety of strengths to the Board table. "I am confident that these members have the depth of knowledge and experience to provide a strong community voice within the Region," said the Minister.

Queens Region Chief Executive Officer Gordon MacKay advised that he has already had some good discussions with the new directors and looks forward very much to working with them.

"Together they have extensive knowledge of the challenges currently facing health systems as well as considerable experience on community boards, and this will no doubt be an asset to our organization," he said.

The appointments are effective immediately.
