Premier Robert Ghiz has asked the Honourable Kathleen Casey, Speaker of the House, to reconvene the Prince Edward Island Legislative Assembly on Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 at 2 p.m.
This will mark the continuation of the Second Session of the Sixty-third General Assembly which was adjourned to the call of the Speaker on December 3, 2008.
The opening day of the Spring session will follow the ordinary daily routine, including Question Period, followed by regular House business.
During the Spring 2008 sitting, the Assembly agreed to change a requirement that Government give at least ten days’ notice of the opening of a new session. As a result, there is now much greater certainty as to when the House will meet. The fall sitting of the Legislative Assembly is to commence on the first sitting day after Remembrance Day each year, the spring sitting of the Legislative Assembly is to start during the first week of April each year and 60 days’ notice of when the Legislative Assembly will meet must be provided to all members. This represents the first time in Island history that there is a set parliamentary calendar.
Regular sitting hours of the Legislative Assembly are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and on Fridays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The public is welcome to attend the proceedings of the House and view the debates from the Public Gallery. The House is carried live on the Assembly’s website at www.assembly.pe.ca .
The Sixty-third General Assembly of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island continues a long history of democracy in this province. The very first assembly was held in July 1773.
