Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Allan Campbell today announced in the provincial legislature that December has been declared as Celebration of the Oyster Month. During the month, people will be encouraged to experience and enjoy the distinctive characteristics of Prince Edward Island’s world famous oysters.
“The month of December will be a time to celebrate the fine quality and great taste of Prince Edward Island oysters,” said Mr. Campbell. “During this month, in cooperation with industry partners, we will be promoting the increased consumption of oysters.”
The celebration was launched in Charlottetown on Tuesday evening at an event hosted by the Claddagh Oyster House.
Mr. Campbell said the department is working closely with the Prince Edward Island Shellfish Association and the Aquaculture Alliance to strengthen and enhance the quantity and quality of oysters produced in the province. Last year, more than six million pounds were harvested and processed, with an economic value of over $13 million.
“The Celebration of the Oyster is a great way to remind all Islanders that the oysters produced in this province are considered as the best in the world,” said Mr. Campbell.
Celebration of the Oyster Month is sponsored by the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development and the Buy Local...Buy PEI initiative. Mr. Campbell said that in the coming year, other seafood products such as mussels and lobster will also be featured in special promotions.
