Supporting small business is the focus of a new mentoring program sponsored by the Province of Prince Edward Island.
Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown said the new program, Business Mentoring PEI, will provide guidance and advice to entrepreneurs interested in launching or expanding a business.
“The Government of Prince Edward Island is committed to working with businesses to strengthen and expand our economy,” said Minister Brown. “The new business mentoring program will allow entrepreneurs to make valuable connections and learn from experienced business managers and owners. This will greatly improve their chances of success in the Island business community.”
Business Mentoring PEI is sponsored by the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning, through PEI Business Development. It will initially be delivered by the Chambers of Commerce in Charlottetown and Summerside and is open to businesses across the province.
“We are pleased to partner with the Province of Prince Edward Island in offering this service to new entrepreneurs and those hoping to expand their operations,” said Kathy Hambly, Executive Director of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce. “This program will provide direction and advice as entrepreneurs face challenges of establishing or growing their business.”
“Management experience is often one of the biggest challenges facing new entrepreneurs,” said John MacDonald, executive Director of the Greater Summerside and area Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber is well positioned to help new business owners connect with experienced managers and business owners. This program is a tremendous educational opportunity for the Island business community.”
Business Mentoring PEI is designed to assist success-oriented entrepreneurs in developing their businesses. This program is also suited to existing and retired business people who are looking for rewarding opportunities to share their knowledge, wisdom and experiences with other entrepreneurs.

BACKGROUNDER
ABOUT BUSINESS MENTORING PEI:
Business mentoring is a partnership of learning between an experienced or retired business person and a new entrepreneur or growth company. The business mentor volunteers his or her time to work with a business owner who is seeking guidance and advice during either the launch or growth phase of their business. The mentee is an entrepreneur who is seeking guidance and knowledge and is receptive to learning from the experiences of others who have “been there and done that.” Those participating in the program may be entrepreneurs at the start up phase or owners of growth firms who are encountering new challenges and feel they would benefit from a mentor’s involvement.
