The PEI Office of Public Safety is reminding Islanders that recognizable and properly displayed civic address number signs are necessary for emergency responders to identify a location where assistance is urgently required.
“A number of emergency responders have expressed concerns with the absence or deteriorated condition of this important signage,” said Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. “As we move into the fall and winter seasons, it is a good time to remind rural property owners to ensure that a recognizable civic number sign is properly displayed.”
The Provincial standards for the recognizable white on blue reflective signs have been legislated to provide for consistencies of design and placement. Recent policy changes permit the use of vertical or horizontal double-sided civic number signs in situations where it would enhance visibility.
Questions about civic number display requirements in Alberton, Borden-Carleton, Brackley, Charlottetown, Cornwall, Georgetown, Kensington, Kinkora, Miscouche, Montague, O’Leary, Souris, Stratford, Summerside, Tignish, Victoria and Wellington should be directed to the appropriate municipal office.
In rural areas, it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure the white on blue civic number signs, which meet legislated standards, are in place. Property owners living outside one of the municipalities listed above can have a replacement sign made by any local sign manufacturer as long as it complies with Provincial standards.
