Canada Games Golf Teams Meet for Exhibition Rounds

* Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour [to Jan 2010]
The Prince Edward Island and British Columbia men’s and women’s 2009 Canada Games golf teams will meet at the Rodd Brudenell Resort Golf Club over the next two days in a pair of 18-hole exhibition rounds.

PEI will have three women’s team members facing B.C. including Erin Brown, Michaela Misener and alternate Molly Molyneaux. The other team member, Katie White, is not available to participate in the two-day event. The boys training team includes Thomas Speare, Chance MacIntyre, Ryan Chapman, Brodie MacGregor, Greg MacAulay and Greg Ellis, and is coached by Dave Bowlan.

“The Canada Games are about young athletes who dedicate their time, efforts, talents and energy to reaching their personal best,” said Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. “I welcome the golfers from British Columbia and wish them, and our own Island golfers, a successful and enjoyable event this week.”

Anne Chouinard, coach of the PEI women’s team, says this tune-up will help both provinces. “Most of B.C.'s team members are heading to school in the U.S. this fall, and they wanted to have a chance to play at Brudenell where the Canada Games golf events will be held next summer. It also gives our players the opportunity to play against another Games team. This will benefit us even if it’s just a friendly match.”

The women will use the Canada Games stroke play format while the men will use match play for the event. The Prince Edward Island men’s team is made up of players 18 and under ; the women's team has players 17 and under. British Columbia is expected to have a young but talented women’s team for the event. The event begins Thursday morning at 10 a.m., with the second round to be played on Friday at 3 p.m. at Brudenell.

Island teams will also be hosting a Canada Games test event at Brudenell October 5-6, 2008. Players from Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador will participate in the 36-hole event.
