To ensure Islanders and visitors have sufficient opportunity to return empty refillable soft drink containers on which higher deposits have been paid, the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry is pleased to announce that Coca Cola Bottling Company and the Pepsi Bottling Group have agreed to continue to pay the traditional higher refund rates on their refillable bottles for the month of August (until August 31, 2008). The refund on refillable soft drink containers was scheduled to be reduced to 10 cents per container on August 1, 2008.
As a result of the distributors agreement to extend the higher refunds, the deposit on all refillable glass pop bottles will be now be reduced to 10 cents per container as of August 1, 2008, but the refunds at the licensed Beverage Container Depots will be maintained at the current rates of 15 and 30 cents. Islanders now have until August 31 to return their empty refillable soft drink containers to a Beverage Container Depot and get a 15 cent refund for bottles 500 ml and smaller and 30 cents for bottles more than 500 ml.
“We greatly appreciate the cooperation of these two companies for their efforts to ensure that Islanders are treated fairly on this matter,” stated Environment Minister George Webster. “We also appreciate the cooperation of our Beverage Container Depots in maintaining this dual refund operation for refillable containers through the month of August.”
