The Mayor of Charlottetown, His Worship George MacDonald, has announced that a Municipal By-Election will be held in Charlottetown - Ward No. 2 Belvedere - on Monday 16 February 1998 to elect a councillor to serve on the municipal council. The Belvedere councillor position became vacant with the resignation of Councillor Richard Brown on 4 December 1997.
The City of Charlottetown has appointed Mr. Merrill Wigginton (Elections P.E.I.) as Chief Electoral Officer for the 16 February 1998 municipal by-election. Elections P.E.I. will exercise general direction and supervision over the administration and conduct of the election. Elections P.E.I. is a nonpartisan independent office of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island.
The City of Charlottetown has opted to use the list of electors compiled for the 3 November 1997 Charlottetown Municipal Election. The city will conduct a revision to this municipal List of Electors for Ward No. 2 Belvedere.
Elections P.E.I. will be mailing each qualified elector a Confirmation of Registration card to officially notify each elector that his or her name appears on the List of Electors for Ward No. 2 Belvedere. If the name or address shown is incorrect or if any elector in your household does not receive a Confirmation of Registration card please phone Elections P.E.I. at (902) 368-5895 or (902) 368-5898. Twelve days have been set aside for the registration of eligible voters. Registration will begin on 14 January 1998 and will end on 27 January 1998. Enumerated electors who receive a copy of the Confirmation of Registration card are asked to please keep his or her card and to take the card with them to the polling station when they vote. This card contains the dates, times and locations of the advance polls and as well the ordinary poll on election day. Should it happen that an eligible elector is missed during this update period the elector may still be able to vote on Election Day 16 February 1998 by going to his or her polling station and swearing the Oath of Elector prior to voting.
Chief Electoral Officer Merrill Wigginton said, "the update to the list of electors is very important in compiling the List of Electors for the 16 February municipal by-election. All eligible electors should make every effort to have his or her name on the List of Electors by registering with Elections P.E.I."
To be eligible to vote in the 16 February municipal by-election a person must be; 1) at least 18 years of age on Election Day, 16 February 1998; 2) a Canadian citizen; 3) and ordinarily resident in the city for a period of six months preceding the date of the election.
