Renovations to the Emergency Department at the Kings County Memorial Hospital are moving to the next phase of development.

“The competitive bidding process is complete and we are pleased to announce that Southern Kings Construction Company from Montague, has been awarded the contract for construction,” says Doug Currie, Minister of Health. “Renovations to the emergency department will begin later this month.”

The public is reminded that during construction the emergency room will be temporarily relocated to another location in the building. “As of February 20, people seeking emergency care should use the front doors at the main entrance, which will be the only public access to the hospital while renovations are taking place,” says Jean Fallis, Administrator at the Kings County Memorial Hospital. “Directions to the temporary ER location will be posted throughout the hospital.”

Renovations to the facility include an expansion of three additional examination rooms, a new waiting room for lab and x-ray patients and a redesigned nursing station. A negative pressure room will also be added to ensure infection control and to prevent the spread of infectious disease.

Plans for the emergency department are designed to help the hospital achieve national standards as determined by the Canadian Triage Acuity Scale, which is used nationally to standardize the process for treating patients in emergency departments across the country.
