The Emergency Measures Organization is coordinating access to generators for community relief centers, which are being set up in some Island communities.
“We have obtained two generators through the Department of Transportation and Public Works, and are providing them to relief centers in Hunter River and Alberton,” said Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. “We are also working with Public Safety Canada to access any additional power generators we may need to supplement provincial resources.”
Red Cross has informed us that they are mobilizing to provide resource and logistical support in response to requests from communities for assistance with relief centers. Their response team is on route with relief materials and supplies for Miscouche, Alberton, Wellington and O’Leary. They have also informed us that Moncton Red Cross is on stand-by to provide additional assistance if required.
Canadian Tire is arranging with Red Cross to make bottled water available for community use.
The Minister reminds Islanders to ensure they have sufficient supplies of potable water, flashlights, portable radios, batteries, and other necessities. Monitor local media for power outage updates, current weather conditions, emergency notifications and information from local officials, and follow any instructions.
The Fire Marshall is also urging the public to use caution when using candles or oil lamps, and ensure that there is adequate ventilation if using kerosene heaters or generators.
“With the forecast for high winds this evening, we urge Islanders to take additional precautions,” the Minister added.
