The residents of Summerside will now be able to enjoy the benefits of a modern, multi-purpose recreational and business facility after the official opening of the city’s new Wellness Centre. The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Honourable Robert Ghiz, Premier of Prince Edward Island and Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart and City Council were on hand for today’s corner stone unveiling ceremonies.

This multi-million dollar facility was made possible through contributions from the Government of Canada, the Government of Prince Edward Island, the City of Summerside, local businesses and citizens of the Summerside area.

“Summerside has always been known as an active community, with a solid reputation for attracting great events and conventions,” said Minister MacKay. “The new Wellness Centre will build upon that reputation and bring added benefits to the community. Our government is committed to working with our partners to foster sustainable development and strengthen the infrastructure and economy of Prince Edward Island.”

The new structure includes: two NHL size ice surfaces, one with stadium seating for over 3,600; a walking track; 2 pools, hot tub and wet/dry sauna; bowling lanes; two squash courts and a fitness facility. There is also a 4500 square-foot convention centre which includes three meeting rooms, each equipped with a food service area.

“This Centre is a fine example of what all three levels of government can achieve when they work together. It combines excellence in terms of the quality of facilities with the access to participation for not only professional athletes but also the local community,” said Premier Ghiz. “Recreation centres are an important aspect of the future growth and prosperity of Island communities, and the provincial government is pleased to have provided funding support for this endeavour.”

Construction on the project was started in 2002. It was completed in phases with the pool and convention centre finished in the spring of 2006, followed by the arena portion in March 2007. The Wellness Centre’s athletic venues are expected to play a major role when the province hosts the 2009 Canada Summer Games.

Summerside Mayor Basil said, “On behalf of City Council, I want to thank the federal and provincial governments both past and present along with previous city councils and all those involved who helped make this magnificent project a reality. This facility was built for use by people of all ages and will be here for many years for our citizens to enjoy.”
